? willy brown is the former mayor of san francisco, former speaker of the house out there. joan walsh is editor-at-large for salon and the author of "what's the matter with white people." i want to get to these points. can you win on the facts having lost perhaps on performance value? >> it's very, very difficult to get people in the world observing politicians to ever come to the substance. they always go for style. they always are influenced by performances, and i believe mr. obama took a licking last night. the public knows that and now to suggest that the facts support what his position is supposed to be i don't think carries. >> you know, i got to ask you a personal question about the president. you know, i do look up to him in so many ways. when i'm with him i say to myself and i do this objectively, i listen to him after he's briefed us on something, this guy ought to be president. he has the command of the issues. he has scope. he has relevance. he can talk to you as regular person in common english as well as the wonk talk. he has an iq that is way up there. yet last night he

to that interaction that we showed earlier between mr. brown and miss elizabeth warren? >> na is sort of textbook how not to run against a female candidate. remember when rick lazio when he ran against hillary clinton and the way he was aggressive and sort of came off like a jerk. the difficulty in debating a woman, it came up debating sarah palin, is that there's a way you handle debating a woman on television so you don't want to look like the heavy and you definitely don't want to look like you're condescending to her or talking down to her. i think scott brown did himself a world of harm in the way he came across. >> because scott brown has always been regarded as a likable chap. you might not like his policies but he's had an affect which people have found warm and personalable. >> i think in this debate and the previous debate he's ruined that image for himself. he's been seen as sort of like a bully. he keeps going after her on this native american question, just over and over again. his campaign is almost centered on it. even when they asked him a question, a sort of fluffy question about the

sirota cohost of the run-down with sirota and brown. molly, let me start with you. it has always struck me as bizarre, almost hypocritical for mitt romney to attack obama care the way he has. he himself mitt romney was in fact the first political voice to say the individual mandate is critical. he got it passed. much to his credit in massachusetts. how can he get away now with it being bad for the nation? >> i'm curious to see what mitt romney says about healthcare in this debate because in the last few weeks we've heard him inching closer to a defense of the mandate and of his own healthcare law which he never actually repudiated but which he sort of backed away from during the republican primary and as you recall, it was a big topic in the republican primary debates being attacked from the right. rick santorum was particularly effective at sort of prosecuting that right wing case against the mandate. but now we have romney saying things like the healthcare law that he passed in massachusetts demonstrates his compassi

, alvin brown. and i want to know who do you think impacts -- who are the people that are moved by this dog whistle? >> caller: people that are listening to information that is incorrect, they are being fed fear. they are afraid because of their livelihoods. they are stuck in an era in their mind where possibly the idea of a black person was someone who was -- wanted to live off of the government. it's just -- it's like watching an old movie, and believing the old movie was real. i think that's the way to put it. >> jamal: so we know that's the case. we have a president of the united states who has been arguing to the country that we know we're in a ditch. we know we have got to get out of a ditch. but do we get out of it by everybody getting behind and pushing the car out, or are we all going to get out of the ditch, every man and woman for him or herself are we going to work together or not? do you think that is something america is going to want? >> i get the feeling that mitt romney is being told what to do. i just feel that he's -- he's being manipul

's discuss that and the professor joins us as well from brown university. michael, ana and jayar here. previewsprofessor, let me start with you. is that a legitimate possibility why president obama has been less forceful last night? >> listen, it's more than a possibility. there is not an ice cube's chance in hell that both sides have not been acutely aware of the mountains of scholarly evidence that black men are perceived as a threat before they speak and all as a group--and when they do, look down look away and defer. it reduces that initial perception. there are incredibly interesting studies on this, both sides definitely are aware of this. that is why i think why romney was baiting obama hoping that the angry black man would pop out and also why obama might have shown that deference. >> you getter not criticize george bush you'll look like wild crazy liberals. >> i disagree a little trish a little despite the fact that she is the scholar, you don't have to be a scholar to know that this is part of american fabric, but the president, he was beat. he was tired. he lost the debate.

as the sky is brown and we all know it's blew, that's one thing. but there have been repeating studies, republicans trotting out democrat-based studies and democrats trotting out republican-based studies, muddling oval yous and how to attack a problem that's ultimately up to the voters and it's really unclear whether either of these candidates is telling the truth or in a sense arguing were for something that can't be done -- >> here's fact that's not unclear. romney says that -- romney essentially has a cvent plan. he says when he unveils which deductions and loop hole his e ee going to close, then you will see that his tax plan won't increase the deficit. that in and of itself is a pretty central fact in this debate, but not, if you look at the media coverage. >> no, that's true. and i think the fact that we have fact checkers playing such an important role gives reporters pass. reporters are not good at math. that's not news. >> remedial math. >> that is definitely news. but they can cover the broader issues. they can cover other things. >> they want to cover the that it irof it and

, your own doctor. but it does say insurance companies cannot church where brown. they cannot impose arbitrary lifetime limits. they have to let you keep your kid on their insurance -- your insurance plan until you're 26 years old. and it also says that you're going to have to get rebates if insurance companies are spending more on administrative costs and profits than they are on actual care. no. 2, if you don't have health insurance, were essentially setting up a group plan that allows you to benefit from group rates that are typically 18% lower than if you are out there trying to get insurance on the individual market. the last point i made before -- your two minutes is up critics i think i have five seconds before you interrupted me. the irony is, that we have seen this model work really well in massachusetts because governor romney did a good thing, working with democrats in the state to set up what is essentially the identical model and as a consequence people are covered there. it hasn't destroyed jobs. and as a consequence, we have a system in which we have the opportunity to

[cheers and applause] we are very grateful to be here on this beautiful campus. we are grateful to the leadership of the university and the entire community and the city of denver and the state of colorado. my happy duty is to introduce some people that will thank a lot of organizations and individuals who have been working for two years to make tonight possible. there are many of them and their contribution is critical to what you will see on fold over the next hour and a half. i am going to start by introducing the co-chairman of the commission on presidential debates, frank, and mike mccurry. [applause] >> good afternoon, ladies and gentleman. welcome to this great city and this great hall and this most important debate. this is a very important time for the commission on presidential debates. this is our 25th anniversary. it was in 1987 when we form the commission on presidential deb

looked like, everywhere you see a brown state, they were losing jobs in the first full year of barack obama's presidency. unemployment, 10.6%, but three years passed, we saw increases in retail, health care, education, and look at the map today. every state that becomes lighter in this picture is a state where there was an improvement in the unemployment rate over that period of time. i will tell you there, ray great many of them out here. the unemployment rate for ohio, changed 7.2%. lock at the massive change in the country in terms of the improvement in terms of states that are no longer losing jobs, but now making jobs. to make that happen, the bureau of labor statistics says you had to have a lot of job creation. 4.4 million jobs created. what you don't hear so much about, we lost 4.3 million jobs in the dark days. the net gain according to the net record, is only 125,000 jobs. based on that even though the president did create a lot of jobs, when you look at that, look at the extent of his claim, 5 million jobs created, we have to say that's simply false. i know many democrats w

the fact that brokers in virginia had elected a republican. in massachusetts, the scott brown race was effectively a referendum on obamacare. and yet this president and nancy pelosi and harry reid rammed it through. >> the question -- if you were elected, do you want these benefits that hundreds of thousands of texans now have -- to do what been taken away? >> that is not exactly right. i support as a dividend health care reform. >> the lot of the land is in the books. do you want to have it taken away? >> you cannot talk about half without the other half. the other half -- i think health care reform should follow if you principals. number one, it should expand competition in the marketplace. number two, it should empower patients and disempower government bureaucrats. let me give you three specific reforms -- one, allow people to purchase health insurance across state lines. that would create a true 50- state national marketplace for health insurance. for example, talking about children under 26 being on the apparent policy. if we get a true national marketplace for of insurance,

. president obama is clearly going to run well there. ken scott brown withstand the blue tide there? -- can scott brown withstand the blue tide there? you have a candidate in indiana who succeeded the incumbent in that the primary. you have a solid republican candidates. i was in arizona about a month ago, where democrats are competitive. it shows that these races are still fluid. you can be undecided and we can say that the race for undecided voters started yesterday. it will still be a couple of weeks before they really engaged. i do not know if people vote in races like a chess game. one from aisle a, one from aisle b. one thing we have not talked about is the fundamental dissatisfaction americans have with government. president, senate, congress, and governor, how do they make those choices? >> i have to agree with fred, for the most part. you look at indiana. if lugar had won his primary, i know indiana would not have been on anybody's map. that is not how it is here it is a very tight race. fred alluded to the fact that, given that romney should win at state, i would be shocked if dem

. with everything from president obama on june 15, with the dream act, a few days ago governor brown decided to give drivers' licenses to illegals. i think we are creating a lot of jeopardy and risk for our people along the border. a piecet's look at about immigration and governor mitt romney, softening his stance on immigration and other issues according to usa today, trying to keep conservative appeal as he courts undecided voters. he told one denver newspaper that he would not revoke temporary visas in what appears to be his latest attempt to soften his tone on key issues. he told the post in an interview that those who qualified for deferred action programs would be permitted to stay for the allotted term. of course, candidate mitt romney, here is what the article goes on to say. his decision to take a nuanced position on the issues two weeks after he dodged a question on the issue. the last caller also mentioned the death of a border agent. here is a story on that. host: we are asking you about what you would like to ask at night's debate. james, democratic line, good morning. caller: i have tw
